FAQs
What testing will I have to do?
We can work together without testing if that is your desire. However, my preference is to gather as much information as possible about to help guide our treatment approach. This usually includes things like microbiome testing, leaky gut testing and SIBO testing depending on your symptoms and history. I also utalise standard pathology testing in my clinical practice.
Will I have to go on a special diet?
I prefer to use dietary inclusion rather than dietary exclusion wherever possible. In general, I see all whole plant foods as healthy and beneficial, not harmful and inflammatory. That said I’m confidant working within your current dietary restrictions. If you are reacting to plant foods then I suspect there is a deeper inflammatory process at play and it’s not the food itself causing the problem. We will work to uncover the underlying cause of your symptoms so that you can liberate your diet and enjoy good healthy food again.
What is the microbiome?
The human gut microbiota (aka gut microbiome, or gut flora) are the microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses that live in your large intestine. It is estimated that there are over 100 trillion microbes in the human microbiome, most of which live in the gut. The gut microbiota is now considered and essential organ without which we can not function properly.
A health gut microbiota provides many beneficial functions to the human body including immune function and defense, production of beneficial short chain fatty acids (SCFA’s), synthesis of many vitamins and neurotransmitters to name a few. Dysbiosis is the term used to describe an imbalanced microbiome, so there are too few beneficial microbes and too many potential inflammatory or harmful microbes leading to inflammation in the gut and system wide causing various symptoms and leading to the development diseases states in the body.
